Dubrovnik Airport continues with the implementation of the “Dubrovnik Airport Development Project" in the upcoming winter period. The project is co-financed by funds of the European Union through the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion (OPCC) 2014-2020. The most delicate portion of the Project is the reconstruction of the runway, which shall be continued at the beginning of November 2018, according to the dynamic plan of construction works. The mentioned reconstruction has commenced in 2017 and was completed in the length of 1200m.
The “Dubrovnik Airport Development Project" shall be performed in three phases during the winter period (28th of October 2018 – 30th of March 2019):
• Phase 1 (beginning of November – mid November): During this period reconstruction works will commence on the runway, due to which restrictions of the runway shall be in force, with landing distance (LDA) of 1425 m and take-off distance (TORA) of 1575 m available in this period.
• Phase 2 (late November – early December): During this period reconstruction of the runway will continue with runway restrictions slightly differing to Phase 1, with LDA of 1425 m, and TORA of 1515 m.
• Phase 3 (December 2018 - March 2019): During this period, construction works will be performed on the runway, but restrictions will be significantly lowered compared to Phase 1 and 2. The available LDA and TORA will be 2100 m.
In these phases of the Project implementation, the ILS LOC ONLY aircraft landing procedure will be provided from the direction RWY12 as well as aircraft landing procedures RWY12 and RWY30, based on the satellite navigation technology (GNSS).
During the mentioned construction phases the critical limit for aircraft operations will be the available length of the runway. Due to the mentioned restrictions, only aircrafts, which do not have limitations regarding the runway take-off and landing length are expected to be able to operate during Phases 1 and 2.
All users of Dubrovnik Airport have already been informed of this decision in an official manner and flight schedules have been adjusted according to said limits. Dubrovnik Airport has approved the flight schedule for the winter season 2018/2019 to all air carriers who have submitted such request. Appended to said approval, the defined conditions for aircraft operations according to the phases of the Project have been provided.
Realistically it cannot be expected for all carriers to be able to operate during Phase 1 and Phase 2, due to the inability of adapting their fleet to the operational restrictions during these phases. We managed to enable aircraft traffic for the national carrier Croatia Airlines from/to Zagreb by using smaller aircrafts, in order to provide each passenger the possibility to travel from/to Dubrovnik.
The period of November and December has been chosen for the runway construction works due to the fact that flights during this period are at their lowest number.
We kindly ask all users of Dubrovnik Airport for patience and understanding, since this is an enormous Project that will be beneficial to all our users for the next 20 years.
